Synopsis: Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) are two love sick people who seem perfect for each other. But Joel wakes up one day alone in bed only later to find out that his perfect mate has erased him from her memory. In a tirade, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to him. But during the procedure, as his memories are coming to him in his dreams, he realizes that he doesn't want to forget Clementine and that he really in fact quite loves her. Now he has to run away with Clementine within his dreams to places in his memory where the computer can't find them knowing that even if he succeds in escaping with some memory of Clementine, he might never be able to get her to love him again.
Should You Watch It? This movie is pretty philosophical and artistic in many parts, especially during his dreams when he's running away with Clementine. There are a lot of abstract thoughts that the audience needs to discover by themselves. The movie jumps from beginning to the end and then to the middle making it hard to follow at first but it's actually the only real way to do a film like this. If you haven't figured it out yet, this movie has almost no action and it is something very different for Jim Carrey.
Things to Watch Out For: This movie goes pretty deep in asking the question of erasing a person from your memory is really the best way to go about things. It does this by not only by following Joel and Clementine but also the people who do these procedures. The director/co-writer, Michel Gondry, has a very interesting take on how our minds incorporates memories and emotions and how we are so rash in making our decisions and how confused our emotions make us.
Things You Don't Expect: This movie has a pretty star-studded cast which don't do much haha. Other than the two main actors, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Tom Wilkinson among others are all in this film very mainstream but kinda artsy.
